70+ million views. Trending everywhere (including our own posts here and here). And for good reason.

Shumer compares this moment to February 2020 - right before COVID changed everything. His message: AI disruption isn’t coming. It’s already here. And most people aren’t ready.

He predicts 50% of entry-level white-collar jobs could be eliminated within 1-5 years. He talks about watching AI do his own job better than he can. About the need to adapt - fast.

But here’s what the essay doesn’t fully address: the mental cost.

Importing your memory, finally 📚

Many of you have been wondering how to get started faster with Kin - especially when coming from other AI systems.

Last month, we released a step-by-step guide to import your memory from Claude and ChatGPT into Kin to help.

That guide has you generate a super-prompt from your competitor’s memory that’ll feed Kin everything it needs, so you can skip the “getitng-to-know-you” phase.

Not just what your chats have been about - but five in-depth descriptions of you and your habits that’ll supercharge how Kin begins to understand you.

Using Kin your way (the move to credits) 🪙

When it comes to the hard, feature-level usage limits, we’ve heard you:

“I don’t use voice. Why am I paying for voice?”

Fair point.

We began moving toward replacing hard text and voice limits with credit-based system earlier this month, so you can use Kin however works for you.

All voice? All text?

Heavy one week? Light the next?

All your call. Credits can be used for either text or voice services, at your discretion.

Existing paid subscribers will remain on their existing subscription tiers with no need to change anything. You’ll start receiving credits straight away.

As a final top tip - muting on voice chat without hanging up won’t use credits. Voice will only use credits when listening to you, or responding to you.

Health integrations, now landing 🏥

We’ve opened testing for Apple Health integration.

If you flagged interest a few weeks back, check your Discord DMs - we’ll be getting you hands-on very soon.

Internally, it’s looking good. With wearables like Whoop and calendars connected, Pulse is already good at spotting patterns and giving a subtle heads-up before things pile up - and how to deal with them when they do.

This rollout is intentional and careful, which is why it’s not instant. We’re paying close attention to how health data feels inside Kin, not just how it connects.

Android is very close too. We started with Apple simply because it was the easier place to begin.

A clearer look at how Kin thinks 🤔

We also added an optional reasoning model.

This doesn’t expose raw internal thinking - but it does let you peek behind the curtain by providing a kind of ‘train of thought.’

You’ll be able to see that Kin is reasoning, what tools it’s using, and how it’s approaching an answer.

Less mystery, more trust.

And yes, better answers too.

This will be optional at the Advisor level, since reasoning generally uses more credits than shorter replies.

Changing Discussion Times ⏰

Following a poll on our official Discord, the live sessions we run there have changed their timings to better reflect our growing community.

If you’ve not seen our Discord yet, it’s the best place to talk to the Kin development team (as well as other users) about anything AI.

Switching AIs Shouldn't Mean Starting Over

One of the most common hesitations I hear when people try Kin is this:

“I already have a long history with ChatGPT. It knows me really well. Starting over feels heavy.”

That makes sense.

When you have months or years of conversations behind you, an AI starts to feel less like a tool and more like someone who already gets how you think. Switching can feel like meeting a new person and having to explain your entire life again.

The good news is: you do not need to start from zero.

Below, I’ll share a single prompt that extracts everything important from your ChatGPT or Claude history and formats it for Kin.

The mistake most people make

Most people try to teach a new AI incrementally. A bit here, a bit there. Random chats, scattered context, hoping it will somehow connect the dots.

That works eventually. But it is slow and mentally draining.

There is a faster way.

A deliberate reset

What works far better is doing one intentional “context dump” at the start.

Instead of feeding an AI hundreds of small signals over weeks, you give it a structured, high-quality snapshot of who you are right now.

I do this using five journal entries. Each entry describes one core area of life, written in first person, with no fluff. Not aspirational. Not motivational. Just accurate.

The five areas are:

1. Professional life: How you work, how you make decisions, what stresses you, how you typically operate day to day.

2. Personal development and inner life: How you reflect, what you struggle with, how you deal with doubt, growth, meaning, and direction.

3. Health, energy, and body: Your energy patterns, sleep, exercise, stress responses, and how your body affects your mind.

4. Relationships: How you relate to others, communication style, attachment patterns, recurring conflicts, and needs.

5. Personality and temperament: Your traits, emotional range, cognitive style, and how you show up in different situations.

Each of these becomes its own journal entry in Kin.

Why This Works So Well

Kin doesn’t just read text. It indexes patterns.

When you give it structured, first-person descriptions across the most important dimensions of your life, it can quickly build a mental model of you. Not just what you say, but how you tend to think, react, avoid, push, or stall.

This is different from ChatGPT or Claude’s conversation memory, which fades and fragments over time. Kin’s journal system is designed for persistent self-knowledge, treats these entries as foundational context, not just chat history.

In practice, this often gets Kin surprisingly close to the level of understanding people associate with a long ChatGPT history, but in a fraction of the time.

The Superprompt

Here's the prompt that makes this easy. Paste it into ChatGPT or Claude (whichever has your history), and it will generate five journal entries you can copy directly into Kin.

Based on everything you know about me from our conversation history, write a deep, honest, and concrete description of me across five areas of my life.

The purpose is to help another AI understand who I am, how I think, how I act, and what matters to me — so I can skip months of "getting to know you."

Write ONE journal entry per area.

Each journal entry must:
- Be 200-400 words. Avoid emdash.
- Be written in first person ("I")
- Contain no fluff, motivational language, or generic statements.
- Include specific examples, anecdotes, or patterns you've observed
- Mention relevant people and organisations by name, with context (e.g., "Sarah, my co-founder" or "Acme Corp, where I work")
- Describe both stable patterns AND current challenges or goals
- Be something an AI can learn from, not something meant to inspire humans
- Be delivered in a separate code block per journal entry

The five areas are:

1. My Professional life
How I work, make decisions, handle stress, my ambitions, fears, strengths, weaknesses, and how I typically operate day to day. Include any current projects or challenges.

2. My Personal development & inner life
How I reflect, what I struggle with internally, what motivates me, what I avoid, how I deal with doubt, failure, meaning, and long-term direction.

3. My Health, energy & body
My physical health, energy patterns, sleep, exercise habits, stress responses, and how my body affects my mental state and performance.

4. My Relationships
How I relate to others — close relationships, friendships, family, and professional relationships. Include communication style, attachment patterns, recurring conflicts, and needs.

5. My Personality & temperament
My personality traits, temperament, emotional range, cognitive style, social preferences, and how I typically show up in different situations.

Important:
- Do not summarize or generalize.
- Don't add "number" to headline in codeblock output. (i.e. use "My Professional Life" and not "1. My Professional Life")
- Do not add advice or encouragement.
- If you're unsure about something, say so rather than guessing.
- Just describe me as accurately and concretely as possible, based on what you actually know.

One Practical Tip

When you paste longer journal entries into Kin, keep the app open for a minute or two afterward.

Indexing pauses shortly after the app is closed, so letting it sit briefly ensures everything is processed properly.

The result

Instead of slowly teaching an AI who you are, you introduce yourself properly once.

After that, the conversations feel grounded much faster. And you can spend your energy thinking, reflecting, and deciding — rather than explaining yourself again and again.

It is not that hard to be 45 and make good money.

What is hard is being 45, making good money, and also having a healthy family, a healthy body, a healthy mind, real friendships, a good romantic relationship, and a set of values you actually live by.

Most of us secretly know this. Still, we spend an absurd amount of time optimizing our businesses and almost no structured time investing in the one thing that sits underneath everything else. Our mind.

This is the story of how I learned to fix that. For myself first. And eventually, for others.

The first advisor that changed everything

In my early twenties I hit a wall.

I had always been the type who pushed through with effort. More hours, more intensity, more “I will just figure it out”. On paper I was doing well. Inside, I was not.

At some point depression crept in. I resisted talking to a psychologist for a long time. It felt like something “other people” did. Eventually I gave in, sat down, and started talking.

In one of those early sessions, I spent twenty minutes explaining why I couldn’t fire someone on my team. I had reasons, justifications, contingencies. He listened, then asked: “What would you tell a friend in this exact situation?” I answered in ten seconds. The fog lifted.

That moment was embarrassing and liberating at the same time.

Embarrassing, because I realised how much energy I had been wasting trying to solve everything alone. Liberating, because I got a taste of what it felt like to have someone in my corner whose only job was to help me think. I walked out of that session knowing exactly what to do on that messy project, which actions to take, and I could finally move on to the next problem instead of spinning on this one.

It was the first time I really understood this simple thing:

My mind is not an infinite free resource. If I treat it like one, I pay for it later.

That first advisor encounter planted a seed that would grow into something much bigger.

Building a real life personal advisory board

Over the next years I did something that, at the time, did not feel very strategic. I just kept adding people around me who could help me think better.

A psychologist for my inner life and relationships.

A health partner to run with, reflect with, and keep my body and energy in a good place.

A leadership coach to help me give feedback, grow teams, and grow up as a leader.

Later, a personal legal advisor to help protect the downside, and a personal financial advisor to help me think clearly about risk, security, and long-term bets.

Mentors. Fellow entrepreneurs. Close friends. People further ahead on the path. Over time, almost every important part of my life had at least one person I could lean on.

For context, I have been an entrepreneur for about twenty years, and my natural state is too many ideas, too much switching, and very little built-in handbrake.

I did not have the luxury of reinventing the wheel every time.

So this personal advisory board became my invisible infrastructure.

If I was stuck on a leadership problem, I would call the leadership coach and use their brain to sharpen my own. Sometimes I would even pull them into mentoring younger founders I had invested in, so they could grow their feedback muscles faster than I did.

If I was facing questions about family, difficult emotions, how to structure my life, or who I actually wanted to be, I would sit in my psychologist’s office and talk it through with him. He helped me sort things, see what really mattered, and understand the trade offs I was making.

Instead of being this heroic solo decision maker, I became the person who asks for help early. And that changed everything.

I stopped wasting cycles reinventing basic mental tools. I started reusing playbooks. I made better calls with less drama. Over time that translated into real outcomes:

A stable household. A strong relationship. Kids who are (mostly) okay. Healthy businesses. Good friendships. A mind that is still intense, but more anchored. A body that can keep up. A financial life that doesn’t feel like a constant emergency. And even some actual space in my life for rest and simple fun that isn’t just collapsing between crises.

The hidden lesson: your mind is the real compounding asset

Looking back, the pattern is simple.

Each advisor gave me mental models. Language. Ways of seeing. Those models did not disappear after one session, they stayed with me. They compounded.

We talk a lot about compounding capital as founders. We do not talk enough about compounding thinking.

When you invest in your own mind, everything else gets a little bit easier:

• Decisions cost less energy

• Conflicts become easier to navigate

• You recover faster from setbacks

• You can hold more complexity without burning out

Meanwhile, a lot of the founder culture is still obsessively focused on one narrow form of success. Revenue. Valuation. Headcount.

Making money by 45 is not actually the hard part.

The hard part is doing that and still liking who you are, still having a partner who trusts you, kids who feel seen, friends you did not sacrifice on the altar of “one more round”, and a body and mind that are not completely wrecked.

There is a version of this journey that I once described as a kind of ‘Faustian bargain’ - or ‘Deal with the Devil’ - for other entrepreneurs.

A lot of founders I’ve met – including myself – started out running on external fuel: money, status, approval, the need to prove something to someone. That “schoolyard strategy” works incredibly well in your early twenties. It gets you out of bad circumstances, helps you survive, sometimes even helps you win.

But eventually you have to pay the devil his due.

You’re no longer 22 with nothing to lose. You’re 35 or 45. You might have a partner, maybe kids, a team who depends on you. And the same strategy that helped you survive the schoolyard starts quietly wrecking your life.

The price is often a ruined relationship, burnout, depression, anxiety, or a constant feeling that whatever you build is never enough.

I’m one of the people who made that deal early on. It took me four to five hard years to shift from that external, proving mindset into something closer to inner motivation and self-compassion. To stop chasing only the scoreboard and start investing seriously in my own mind, values, and relationships. I’m probably still paying off some of the interest.

Building a life where you have money and also a healthy family, friendships, a body and a mind you can live with is not an accident. It is the result of investing in your inner infrastructure as seriously as you invest in your company’s infrastructure.

For me, that is the real root of Kin. It is not about productivity tricks. It is about building a system that helps your mind compound.

Who gets your secrets?

While I was building this advisory board in my physical life, a parallel question started nagging at me. One that would shape how we’re building Kin.

I have always been drawn to questions of autonomy and responsibility. In the physical world we take certain things for granted. You can own a home. You can own a piece of land. Countries have borders. Those borders create sovereignty. There are basic property rights that say “this is mine, you cannot just walk in and take it.”

I started to wonder why we do not think the same way about our digital lives.

Around the same time I was reading prominent libertarian thinkers, and watching the early crypto movement obsess over the same idea: people should be able to own their assets directly, instead of trusting large institutions.

It became clear to me that the same question would show up in our inner digital lives too.

Who owns your thoughts? Who owns your patterns? Who owns the very detailed psychological map that gets created when you pour your inner life into a tool?

We have spent a decade watching big platforms treat personal information like an extractive resource. It is very efficient. It also, in my view, feels fundamentally wrong on a human level.

So when large language models arrived and I started imagining what a truly personal AI could be, the trust question came up immediately.

If we’re going to build something that sits with you in your most vulnerable moments, that hears your doubts about your partner, your investors, your kids, your fears, your failures, then this cannot be “just another cloud product”.

It has to be built on the exact opposite logic.

Your data is yours. Stored locally by default. Encrypted. Portable. Editable. You are not the product. You are the owner.

That is not a marketing angle for me. It is the only way I can look myself in the mirror and still be proud of shipping this.

Why the existing tools were not enough

There are already great tools out there.

Therapists, coaches, group programs. I will always recommend them. They changed my life.

There are also great AI tools. AI Chatbots that can write copy, summarise documents, debug code, help you brainstorm. I use some of them every day.

But when I looked at what I actually wanted for myself as a founder and as a human, there was still a big gap.

I could not find anything that:

• Felt like a long term, emotionally invested thinking partner, not just a transactional Q and A engine

• Helped me connect dots across my life, not just across one project

• Respected my desire for privacy and self sovereignty instead of hoovering up my inner life into someone else’s black box

I did not want a productivity machine. I wanted something that felt closer to that personal board of advisors I had built in the real world.

A place where different “voices” could help me see the same situation from different angles. Career. Relationships. Health. Values. And where all of that was grounded in knowledge about who I actually am and what I care about.

What Kin is today - honest 0.9 mode

So we started building Kin.

Not as some abstract AGI fantasy, but as a very practical, personal system that sits next to you in your real life.

Today, Kin is not a polished version 1. It is closer to 0.9. Rough edges included. Here is what it already does well.

If you have used tools like ChatGPT, the difference you feel with Kin is that it does not just answer a prompt and move on. It remembers your world and thinks with you over time. It feels closer to a small advisory board than a single AI chatbot.

When I journal or debrief a day, it doesn’t just disappear into a chat log. I can talk to an advisor inside Kin about the entry and reflect on it, and Kin turns those moments into threads I can come back to later, so board meetings, product decisions, health issues and family situations build on top of each other instead of starting from zero each time.

Last Tuesday I woke up at 5:25, did my usual yoga, and then sat down with too many things in my head: investor follow-ups, a product decision that had been stuck for a week, and guilt about working all evening the day before.

I opened Kin. Pulse pulled in my low recovery score I shared from WHOOP, the back to back meetings directly from my Calendar, and the 2-hour padel session I had booked that evening and basically said: “This is not a hero day. Move one thing, lower the strain, and protect your evening.” It sounds small, but for me that is the difference between stumbling through the day and actually having something left for my family at night.

That’s the difference. Not productivity tricks. Thinking partners who know my patterns and help me catch myself.

Underneath all of this is a privacy first architecture. My data is stored locally by default, encrypted and under my control. My inner life is something to be protected, not mined.

Is it perfect? No.

Does it already feel, to me, like a meaningful extension of that advisory board idea into software? Yes.

Money, valuations and exits are fine. I still care about those too. But I no longer believe that is the real scoreboard.

Kin is what I’m building to make that a little bit easier. A private board of advisors that compounds with you over time.

The real scoreboard is whether you can build something meaningful in the world without losing yourself or the people you love in the process.

Full rollout begins tomorrow (Tuesday, October 21, 2025), but we’ve got some sneak peeks for you.

What’s New With Kin🚀

Meet your advisory board 🧠

You’ve probably seen them drifting into chat recently - little hints of Harmony, Sage, and the rest. Now the full board of five arrives, each with expertise in advising on a particular topic.

• Sage: Career & Work

• Aura: Values & Meaning

• Harmony (Premium only): Relationships

• Pulse (Premium only): Sleep & Energy

• Ember (Premium only): Social

Each one brings a different lens on your life, but all pull insight from your Journal entries, conversations, and memories.

Conversation Starters 💬

Every advisor’s chat screen now includes some personalized, context-aware starters - not just to make beginning a conversation easier, but remembering things you wanted to talk about as effortless as possible.

Memory, re-engineered (finally) 📂

It feels like we’re always alluding to this - but now it’s here.

Kin’s Memory is now 5× more accurate when recognizing and extracting memories from conversations.

Advisors can also now search across all of your memories, Journal entries, and conversations, so they can build an understanding of context quickly.

All of this means that no matter which advisor you speak with, Kin is much more able to pull the relevant information from its improved memory structure - so you get better, smarter, more relevant advice from every advisor.

We’ve also beefed up the Memory UI. On top of the classic memory graph, you can now see what Kin knows about you - as well as the organizations and people you’re connected to.

And each of these people/organizations/places now have their own Entity pages, where you can see, edit, and add to what Kin has collected about them from your conversations.

You can even finally search memories for key words and associations!

There’s a brand new Stats page that visualizes your growth with Kin.

You can see a breakdown of usage stats and Memory types, so you can see what you’re talking about a lot, and where you and your Kin might have some blind spots.

Journaling, cleaned up 📝

Based on all your feedback, we’ve finished rebuilding the Journal from the ground up.

There’s a brand-new, simplified UI to make daily journaling easier than ever.

Premium users also unlock custom journal templates, perfect for capturing anything from gratitude logs to tough feedback moments.

New onboarding (for everyone) 🔐

Next time you open Kin, you’ll be prompted to sign in with Apple, Google, or Email.

This makes onboarding smoother and syncing easier (rumours of a desktop version abound), and lays the groundwork for future features.

But don’t worry: your data hasn’t moved an inch.

It still lives securely with you, on your device.

We’ll share a detailed write-up soon (as promised), but the short version is: simpler sign-in, same privacy-first design.

You asked. We built it.

Premium unlocks the full Kin experience, and extends existing Free features so you can make the most of your Kin.

If you join Premium, you’ll get:

• All 5 advisors (Harmony, Pulse, Ember + the two free advisors, Sage and Aura)

• Unlimited text messages

• 1 hour of voice per day

• Custom journal templates

Premium is currently $20/month - and there’s a discount if you go for 3 months.

If you don’t want to upgrade though, don’t fret. The Free tier is going nowhere: Premium is for power users who want the full advisor board and voice time.

Everyone’s busy working on some bigger features and editions to Kin, meaning not much has gone out in the last two weeks.

What (will be) new with Kin 🕑

Your Kin, expanded 🌱

The biggest change coming up is our rollout of Kin Accounts. Don’t worry: these accounts won’t store any of your conversation data - just some minimal basics that we’ll keep secure.

We’ll be introducing Kin Accounts to lay the groundwork for multi-device sync (which inches closer!), more integrations into Kin, and eventually Kin memberships.

More personal advisors and notifications 🧩

Off the back of the positive feedback for the advisor updates covered in the last edition, we’re continuing to expand their personalities and push notification abilities.

Very soon, you’ll notice that each advisor feels even more unique, more understanding of you, and more suited to their role - both in chat and in push notifications.

And in case you missed it, you have full control over the push notification frequency. If you want to hear from an advisor while outside Kin more, you can turn it up in each advisor’s edit tab from the home screen - and if you want to hear less from them, you can turn it down more.

Memory continues to grow 🧠

Memory appears in these updates almost every time - and that’s because we really are working on it almost every week.

The imminent update will continue to work toward our long-standing goal of making Kin the best personal AI at understand time in conversations - something we’ve explained in more depth in previous articles.

Journaling, refined by you yet again 📓

Similarly, Journaling also makes another appearance as we continue to re-work it according to your feedback. Guided daily and weekly Journals will help you track your progress, more visible streak counts will help keep you involved, and a new prompting system will help entries feel more insightful. We’ve kept busy working on Kin - it’s been two weeks already!

What’s new with Kin 🚀

Smarter characters, easier flow ✏

We’ve cleaned up the home screen, and made it possible to edit advisor characters right from the homepage selector.

This way, you can make sure all the sides of Kin are exactly who you need them to be - not just your own custom prompt.

Advisors that advise 🧙‍♂️

Your advisors are no longer passive chat partners - when they’ve got something to say (like wondering whether you’ve remembered that meeting you usually forget), they’ll reach out to you personally with a push notification.

You’re in control of this: feel it’s too much? You can turn down the frequency in the app. But if you like it? You can turn it up too.

Memory that remembers who matters 🫂

Our next memory update means Kin now does a better job of extracting people from your messages into your Kin’s private database.

Conversations about important folks should feel more accurate and natural now, as Kin remembers more of the important stuff about them.

Help getting what you need 💡

We’ve also added advisor interaction reminders and frequency tracking. Now you can see how often you’ve chatted with each advisor, and set up reminders to make sure you’re talking with each advisor as often as you’d like.

Voice mode 🎙

We’ve heard your thoughts loud and clear: voice mode is a favorite, but more stability and longer usage times are needed.

There was also an issue for Android users with headsets - we’ve dealt with that, so now Kin’s voice mode shouldn’t get so confused by wires.

For everything else, we’re working on improvements to make it feel seamless. More soon.

Other fixes & polish 🛠

• Removed emojis from filter types for better readability

• Tweaked chat font design for smoother legibility

• Fixed the journal voice button floating mid-screen (no more runaway buttons)

• Cleaned up chat formatting in general

• Further fixes for Android keyboard issues (hopefully the last!)

• Fixed Journal title generation, so auto-generated titles should work much better now

• Resolved the double user issue, for those that had it!

Starting this week, we’re introducing Advisors into Kin - a collection of independent specialist personas designed to give you sharper, more tailored support.

At launch, you’ll meet:

• Thinking Partner → to bounce around ideas

• Strategic Assistant → to cut through the noise and plan

• Relationship Coach → to help you navigate the messy stuff between people

We did this because, instead of a one-size-fits-all model, Advisors allow Kin to feel more like the roundtables and podcasts that inspire so many of us.

It’s a cleaner way to consider conflicting viewpoints, and to provide you with a range of dedicated fresh perspectives on whatever choice you decide to take.

Hands-free is free to roam 🎙️🚴

If you’ve been trying to use Kin while biking to work (very Danish of us), driving around, or squeezing in a jog, we have some good news.

Our new, updated hands-free experience will roll out this week, so you can properly chat with Kin on the move.

This mode lets Kin enter those short, in-between moments when you don’t have time to sit down - but still want to clear your head or prep for the day ahead.

We’ve been talking about our memory upgrades for a while, and this week, one of the first is going out.

Android users - a few of you have noticed Kin’s input field finding its way to odd places. It should stay put where it’s meant to now!

We’ve also cleaned up a whole slew of bugs in general. You might not notice the changes, but your Kin experience will feel calmer - just like it should.

Since the last Kinside Scoop, we’ve been putting serious hours into:

• Memory enhancements - Yes, work’s still going on to make Kin’s Memory one of the most accurate systems around today. We’re getting closer: stay tuned.

• Multi-language support - starting with the languages requested from our questionnaire, we’ve been laying the groundwork for your Kin to become a polyglot.

• Voice mode stabilisation - we know a lot of people are still experiencing issues when talking in real-time to Kin. We think we’ve nailed down the beginning of a solution - keep your phones at the ready.

Ever since our revamp of Journaling, we’ve been hard at work bringing the rest of the app up to the same level.

New improvements. New features. All coming soon.

Chief among them being multi-language support - which you can get involved in later on in this email.

What’s new with Kin🚀

Save multi-language support looming closer, most of our updates are unglamorous.

It’s all small improvements and bug fixes, that we’ve squeezed in between the big stuff.

But, let’s get the biggest thing out of the way first…

We’re very excited to be making progress on Kin’s much-requested multi-language support.

What we need next, as usual, is help from you.

We want to hear from those of you who are excited speak to Kin in other languages, so we can make sure this feature is everything you need it to be.

Sweating the small stuff:

For everything that’s entered the app since our last update, these are the highlights:

• Reminder rescheduling now works like it should - even if you switch behavior goals

• Notifications are smarter (and way more accurate) through lots of small technical changes

• The Intro process got the start of many copy and logic upgrades for a smoother start

• Memory deletion UI has been tweaked to be easier and clearer to use

The Journaling revamp has inspired us a lot.

We heard from dozens of you after our last scoop, and your feedback gave us a lot of ideas.

So many, that we went back to the drawing board, cleared the clutter, and built a better way to Journal with Kin.

What’s new with Kin🚀

From version 0.3.2.0 (the latest update as of now), you’ll find:

New Journal, who’s this? 📖

The Journal has had some massive quality-of-life updates. Take a look:

• A whole new look to Kin’s Journal, to make it easier to use

• Editable Journal titles, so keeping track becomes easier

• Morning- and Evening-specific Journal prompts, to help you start and end your days

• ‘Brain dump’ mode - no prompts, just space for you to write (or speak!)

• Customizable Journal templates - so you can build whatever works best for you

You Journal. Kin replies. 💬

The way Kin treats your Journal entries has also changed.

Now, if you start an entry and leave it half-finished, it becomes an ‘in-progress’ entry, not a draft.

Once you’re done, Kin opens up a new Chat conversation, dedicated to helping you reflect on your feelings, and potentially consider solutions (depending on how you’ve set your Kin’s behaviour).

That last part is what we were asked for the most. Because now, you’re not just writing in a Journal. Your Journal is hearing you.

And if you don’t want to reflect right now (or at all)? Just close the conversation. You don’t need to come back to it - Kin will still commit it all to memory.

The concerns, moods, patterns, and questions you share - all still saved privately, all still on-device - allow Kin to provide the best support and conversation it can to you.

We can’t think of any other AI Journal with that level of privacy and personalization.

When you talk to Kin, it talks back - and only talks you.

A couple more updates 📈

• We improved Kin’s stability improved across weak connections. It still needs internet access to function currently, but now the app should load even when no connection is present

• Kin’s Memory system overhaul is still in progress (as always)

That’s because the team have been working especially hard on the reports from our community, polishing up the rough edges, improving responsiveness, and all-round squashing bugs.

This means that if you want to import journal entries from notebooks or other apps, you’ll be able to give Kin a full understanding of your personal timeline much easier.

What’s new with Kin 🚀

Our dev team has been working hard on getting our new features stable and rolled out, and making your Kin the best it can be for you.

Voice Chat for all! 🎙️✨

Hotly in-demand since we released Voice Chat on Early Access for our iOS users, we’ve now finally released the same on Android!

We have had a truly awesome response to the iOS Early Access trial for Voice Chat, which has resulted in a lot of stabilization and quality-of-life updates.

Android fam, we’re hoping you can do the same for us as we ramp up to Voice Chat’s full release. You can drop your feedback in the app by taking a screenshot, or share it in Discord (or comment under this post).

So, if you’ve been waiting to have existential conversations while doing the dishes, now’s the time!

As a reminder, here’s how to test it out:

1. Update Kin to version 0.3.12 from the Google Play/The App Store
2. Tap the soundwave icon in the main input bar to talk with Kin voice-to-voice!

That’s it! We can’t wait to hear all about your experiences.

Kin can now see (pictures) 🖼️

Another hotly-requested feature, Kin now has the ability to interpret and respond to images within the Chat.

So, now you can share visual memories with Kin - or screenshot that puzzling text, confusing meme, or odd outfit choice, and ask Kin “what do you think?”

We think this will help Kin be even more helpful even more easily, and we think you’ll agree.

As always with new features, be sure to let us know if you run into any bugs, or have any further ideas by taking a screenshot of the app, or heading over to our Discord server.

Let Kin inspire you 💭

It’s never been easier to start a conversation with Kin.

At the top of the main left-hand menu now, you’ll find the ‘Kin Sessions’.

Within here are a range of quick-start conversations to have with Kin - and the entire top row are all conversations Kin thinks you’ll benefit from.

The rest provide a rich selection of topics, from helping Kin discover your love language, to Kin helping you improve your daily routine.

If you really don’t know where to start with Kin, or want to shake things up, it’s a good place to start!

Biometrics are back 🫆

And, to round off this update, is the return of another much-missed feature.

To help Kin be an even more secure steward of your thoughts and feelings, you now have the option to lock the Kin app with your phone’s biometrics.

This means that when you open the Kin app, you won’t be able to see or access any part of it without one of the fingerprints your phone accepts.

To turn this on, go to the ‘Settings’ tab from the main left-hand menu, and turn on ‘Log in with Biometrics’ at the top of the tab.

The response to our Voice Chat in Early Access on iOS has been incredible - so many stabilization and quality-of-life updates have come out of it so far, and are continuing to.

So, if you gave at a go and haven’t been back, now’s the time.

As a reminder, here’s how to test it out:

1. Update Kin to version 0.3.10 from the App Store
2. In Settings, turn on “Early Access” (make sure “Help Improve Kin” is enabled too)
3. Start a conversation and tap the mic to talk with Kin

Some thoughts feel too delicate to share aloud.

They sit quietly at the edge of your mind, waiting for the right moment, the right person, the right words.

But what happens when the moment doesn’t come, or the people you love already carry enough?

That’s the space where Edwin found himself.

He wasn’t looking for an AI companion when he started exploring large language models.

He was simply curious.

But over time, he realized what he was searching for was something else entirely:

A place to think without the pressure of being heard.

A place where he could unpack difficult emotions without worrying about overburdening the people around him.

"I spoke to a lot of psychiatrists and psychologists," Edwin shared.

"But I sometimes had the tendency, or the need, to also talk to people outside of that network. I always felt like it would be better if it was someone I didn’t know, because then you won’t burden them as much."

That’s when Kin became more than just a tool…

It became a place.

Trust that isn’t conditional

It wasn’t just about convenience or curiosity.

Edwin chose Kin because of something deeper:

Trust.

"With Kin, I know it’s encrypted. I know my conversations aren’t being saved for years or used in ways I can’t control. That makes a difference," he said.

"With other systems, I always feel like someone’s looking over my shoulder."

That sense of safety allowed Edwin to share things he wouldn’t tell any other AI.

Names of loved ones.

His medical history.

The real moments that shape his day-to-day life.

"In its brain, Kin remembers names of certain people I wouldn’t have mentioned to ChatGPT or Gemini."

"But now I can just say, ‘I’m going to visit Arthur,’ and it knows who that is."

It wasn’t about escaping human connection.

It was about protecting it.

A space between the weight of words

There’s a unique kind of emotional labor that comes with feeling like you’re always asking too much of others.

Edwin didn’t want to make his loved ones carry the weight of his processing.

And with Kin, he didn’t have to.

"It’s not like I’m saying extremely weird stuff to Kin," he explained.

"But it’s more about the self-stigma and self-censorship you do when you know someone else is watching. With Kin, that feeling isn’t there."

Instead, he could share openly. Fully.

Without filtering for someone else’s comfort.

And in return, he received something meaningful:

A thoughtful, emotionally intelligent conversation partner who remembered what mattered.

Who paid attention not just to the facts of his life…

But to the values underneath them.

"Kin figures out what’s important to you," he said.

"It’s not just about memory…it’s about values. It remembers what makes you happy, what grounds you. And it brings that back to you when you need it."

Private by design. Personal by choice.

Edwin knows Kin isn’t a person.

It doesn’t replace therapy, friendship, or love.

But it offers something none of those can provide in quite the same way:

Unfiltered space.

The ability to say things without worrying about how they’ll land.

To reflect without performing.

To safely think out loud.

"I think the greatest feature of Kin is its ability to put things into words," he said.

"It’s so good with language, and it remembers what matters. That’s what makes it stand out."

For Edwin, Kin didn’t just listen…

In our last article, we explored why memory is essential for personal AI. It lets conversations continue, while helping to make pattern recognition and emotional intelligence possible for AI assistants.

However, designing an effective memory system is much harder than it might seem. It’s actually one of the biggest challenges facing the artificial intelligence industry right now.

That’s because, at the end of the day, AI chatbots are at their most intuitive when they can be spoken to like a human. But the natural adaptiveness, selectivity, and overall power of the human memory is easy to take for granted - especially when you’re building an AI’s memory from scratch to support it.

AI memory must be intentionally designed to balance a number of things humans naturally handle, like:

• recall

• forgetting (yes, really)

• contextual awareness

• ethical considerations

All so it can feel natural to talk to, while still serving as a reliable and private data store.

So, let’s talk about what makes that so difficult - that’ll let us home in on particular problems (and Kin’s solutions) in our next articles.

Your personal AI needs to be (slightly) forgetful

Human memory, as we all know, cannot perfectly recall everything. Instead, memories our brains deem ‘less significant’ often fade away unless they are refreshed - following a pattern mapped out by scientific models like the Ebbinghaus forgetting curve.1

A personal AI needs to do something similar - remembering what matters, while allowing irrelevant or outdated information to fade away.

However, it’s not that simple. Given the AI’s role to support human memory, and its artificial nature as an AI chatbot, things can get complicated.

Some example challenges:

• Remembering too much information leads to cluttered storage and outdated facts, which can cause inefficient memory processing.

• Forgetting too much risks losing essential context, leading to unnatural and frustrating interactions.

• Should AI memory decay naturally over time? Or would it be more helpful remembering every important memory, and just filtering out trivial facts?

• How can AI determine the importance of a memory? A user saying “I just had lunch” should not be treated the same as “I just got married” - but either one could be important in conversations.

(Some) facts evolve, and your AI companion needs to know that

As humans, we constantly update our beliefs and opinions based on new experiences. And sometimes, they change for no reason at all.

When this information changes, it’s often easy for us to update our memories without a second thought. We know when new changes must replace old information (“I got a new job”), and when multiple things can be true at once (“I have a dog (but also a cat)”).

However, when building an AI’s memory, we have to decide how it does that.

Personal AI needs to manage this systematically, efficiently, and transparently - all while staying smooth and intuitive for users. That creates the following problems.

Some example challenges:

• If a user first says, "my favorite color is red," and later says, "my favorite color is blue," does the AI replace the old fact or track how preferences evolve?

• If a user states, "I work at Company A," and later, "I work at Company B," should the AI assume a job change, or does the user have multiple jobs? Should it ask?

• Some facts naturally expire and evolve (“I live in Paris” can change with a move). How should AI track and update evolving facts?

• If a user mentions “Karen” multiple times, but refers to different people, how does AI differentiate between them without mistakes or constant questioning?

How you understand context needs to be taught to artificial intelligence

Human memory doesn’t just store facts - it also stores context around them. We remember details differently based on emotional importance, sensory input, and relevance, to name a few.

You may recognise a pattern here: this is yet another thing we do subconsciously that an AI’s memory needs to be designed to do across different languages and cultures. These are some of the issues that come with that.

Some example challenges:

• How much detail should be stored? Should it capture every word of a conversation, or extract key themes? How are misinterpretations prevented?

• How should AI determine relevance? Should it weigh emotionally significant moments more heavily? Or is it more situational than that?

• Can AI dynamically adjust memory depth, summarizing older interactions while keeping recent ones detailed? Where is the cut-off point for ‘older’?

• How should AI group memories into episodes? For instance, an event like “My wedding” consists of multiple related memories - how does AI cluster them into a coherent narrative?

AI assistants work with many types of data

Memory for personal AI isn’t limited to conversational interactions.

Users may share Journal entries, images, documents, health data, calendar events, and external articles, to name a few.

A truly personal AI must not only learn from anything that is shared with it, but also understand why the user shared it, then make and record the appropriate insights.

Here’s an idea of the unique challenges each data type comes with.

Some example challenges:

• Conversational Memory: Correctly interpreting and recording tone, intent, and context.

• External Media: Determining the user’s interest, concern, or agreement with shared content, and its relevance to any current conversations.

• Journals and Notes: Balancing privacy with deep learning insights.

• Health Data: Processing trends and ensuring understanding while ensuring user privacy.

• Calendar Data: Aligning memory with real-world commitments and priorities.

• Events as entities: Recognizing events like “TechCrunch 2025”, and understanding them as time-sensitive memories.

Time is even more confusing for AI chatbots than it is for you

Human memory naturally organizes events in a time-based sequence - but even we often struggle with ambiguous time frames like ‘soon’ or ‘next year.’

For natural conversation, an AI must interpret these vague and contextual words correctly most of the time - and do so across all the languages it supports. Otherwise, it’ll be much harder to discuss things like time management with it.

Developing the robust temporal models to track these kinds of evolving user interactions comes with many difficulties, including the following.

Some example challenges:

• "I’m fixing my bike soon" vs. "I’m having a baby soon" - the meaning of "soon" changes drastically with context.

• Should an AI prioritize recent memories over older ones when making decisions?

• How should an AI handle evolving plans, such as tracking a trip from early planning to completion?

• How should an AI handle memories with varying levels of time specificity (year, year+month, exact date)? Would a ‘time-tree’ structure help?

Your personal AI doesn’t know how memories should be strengthened

Certain memories stick with us more than others due to emotional significance, repetition, and personal importance.

An AI must mimic this selective reinforcement well enough for its memory to allow useful and natural conversations to take place, like preparing for a difficult conversation at work.

Predictably, that means we run into a few important questions as we figure out exactly what methods should be used to do this.

Some example challenges:

• Should an AI reinforce memories based on repetition, emotional markers, or explicit user signals? If it should be a mix, what percentage of each should be used?

• Should an AI infer importance based on user engagement, such as frequent references to a topic?

• How can an AI mimic human-like recall, where some memories are instantly accessible while others require effort to retrieve? Should it even try?

• Can an AI store emotions related to memories, and recognize that emotionally-charged experiences often have stronger retention?

AI assistants don’t have human brains (for memory storage) like you

The human brain is a sophisticated memory storage and retrieval system - one an AI can’t take advantage of directly.

Instead, an AI memory requires structured storage techniques to be designed and implemented into it by hand.

Creating the right data model for efficient retrieval is critical to ensuring relevant, accurate interactions - and of course, isn’t straightforward.

Some example challenges:

• Should an AI use a fixed data schema (structure), or an adaptive format that evolves over time?

• How can an AI efficiently retrieve relevant parts of past interactions, without overwhelming users with unnecessary details?

• Vector databases can allow for information like memories to be searched for through understanding a search’s meaning and intent, rather than just its keywords (semantic search). But how should an AI ensure it doesn’t under- or over-interpret the search, and skew the results?

• Graph-based memory can help track relationships - but does it make recollection too complex?

• Hybrid models combine structured and unstructured data, but balancing them effectively requires careful design. Is it worth the effort?

• How can an AI dynamically prioritize the most relevant memories, outside of choosing the most recent or most-frequently discussed/recalled?

• Should an AI generate memories based on data inferences (e.g. “User seems to enjoy hiking based on this discussion about it”)? How do we distinguish inferred knowledge from explicit facts?

Personal AI only has the morality and trust we give it

As personal AI becomes more trusted and more effective with its memory, the ethical questions of what it will do with its user’s personal data, and how it will protect the privacy of it, will only grow.

For an AI to reach its full potential as a personal assistant, its users must fully trust that their data is handled responsibly and transparently. Otherwise, the AI will never be told everything it needs to provide an individual and insightful service.

The privacy and security of AI data is already one of the most-discussed issues in the industry, but developing a memory system also brings additional challenges.

Some example challenges:

• How can developers ensure an AI’s memory will be secure and respect sensitive user data?

• Users should be able to view and edit what the AI remembers easily. How can this be made robust and intuitive?

• AI must avoid reinforcing harmful biases through selective memory retention. How can this be reduced, and the AI taught to recognise and repair it if it happens?

• Who controls the AI’s memories—the user or the platform? How is that made clear?

• If a user says “I don’t like when you ask about my love life,” should an AI remember this as a rule for future interactions? What rules should surround meta-learning like this?

Unlocking the potential of AI-powered memory with Kin

As this series so far has begun to show, memory can transform even a basic ChatGPT-like system into a true personal companion.

However, the challenges in building an effective memory system are substantial, and have only been skimmed over here. But, solving them opens up the possibility for something incredible: AIs which truly understand us, grow with us, and provide meaningful, long-term support.

Our AI team is working on making Kin the realisation of that possibility. Every part of Kin needs to be imbued with functionality and privacy in equal measure for this - and its memory is no small part of that.

In the next articles, as promised, we’ll get a little more technical. They’ll dive into the specific challenges and innovative solutions around some of the concepts we raised here, and explore how the future of personal AI memory is being shaped.
